Naomi Davies could feel her heart pounding as the wheels of the plane touched down on Nigerian soil. The familiar hum of the airport’s air conditioning did little to calm the growing storm inside her. Lagos, with all its noise, heat, and chaos, was still the same, yet it felt different now. The memories of her youth, the life she left behind, and the dark forces that once lured her into their web came rushing back.
It had been years since she left, years of silence, of distance. She had traded the chaotic streets of Lagos for the calm, orderly life in London. She had tried to outrun the people who once controlled her, to start fresh. But the message had changed everything. “We need you.”
They had been waiting for her return. The very organisation she thought she had escaped. Naomi had spent years building a life away from the shadows, but they had found her. They always did.
Her mother, Dr. Evelyn Davies, was already waiting for her in the arrival hall, looking as poised as ever. Naomi had always felt the weight of her mother’s expectations, and her constant striving for perfection. There was little space in her mother’s world for failure. Naomi had always felt like she could never quite measure up, no matter how hard she tried.
“Naomi,” Evelyn said with that ever-present coolness in her voice. “Welcome home. We need to talk.”
Naomi felt the knot tighten in her stomach as she followed her mother to the car. She hadn’t returned for a family reunion or for a heartfelt welcome; there were no embraces here. This was business, as it always had been with her mother. And Naomi knew better than to argue.
As they drove through the familiar streets of Lagos, Naomi couldn’t help but think about the years she spent studying at XB University. It was there that everything changed, the place where she had first come into contact with The Council. The group of enigmatic individuals who saw something in her that others didn’t. She had been offered a position that promised power, influence, and, above all, respect.
She had accepted without hesitation. They had trained her in ways she never imagined, covert operations, intelligence gathering, and strategic thinking. For a young woman hungry to prove herself, it had been the perfect opportunity. But it was also the beginning of her downfall.
The mission that broke her was one she would never forget. A high-stakes operation, where one mistake meant the loss of everything. Naomi had been tasked with overseeing the exchange of classified information. But things went horribly wrong. The mission fell apart, and Naomi was left to deal with the fallout. The failure was hers, and the guilt was a constant companion.
Her mother had not been forgiving. “You’ve ruined everything,” Evelyn had said, her words like knives. “You don’t even know what you’re doing with your life!” Naomi had never been able to forget that. She had left Nigeria, cutting ties with The Council and her family, escaping to London, where she tried to start anew. But, as she stood in her mother’s presence again, Naomi realised that she had never truly escaped the past.
The message from The Council was still fresh in her mind. She had tried to resist, but they knew where she was, and they knew how to find her. There was no escaping the past.
“You’ll come back, Naomi,” Evelyn had said, almost as a command. “You always do.”
And she had. Naomi knew, deep down, that she could never truly escape. Her past would always follow her, lingering in the shadows, waiting for the moment when it would pull her back in.
As they arrived at the family estate, Naomi felt a sense of dread settle over her. She had never truly felt at home in Nigeria, not in the way her family had expected. The fear of failure, of never being enough, had always haunted her, and now it was back.
She had returned, but she wasn’t sure if she had come to fight or to surrender.
The Council had called her back, and Naomi had no choice but to answer.
